Confidence Building
Hypnotherapy for Confidence in Bristol
Confidence isn’t a fixed personality trait - it’s something shaped by experience, learning, attention, and expectation. Many people who struggle with confidence don’t lack ability or potential; instead, they become caught in patterns of self-doubt, overthinking, harsh self-criticism, or imagining negative outcomes before situations even happen.
Over time, this can lead to avoidance, hesitation, and a growing sense of uncertainty in situations that matter most - whether that’s at work, socially, in relationships, or during performance situations.
Psychological research on self-efficacy shows that confidence is strongly influenced by our learned expectations about our ability to cope and perform in specific situations (Bandura, 1997). In other words, confidence is not something you either “have” or “don’t have” - it can be developed through new experiences, new patterns of thinking, and repeated practice.
Using hypnosis alongside techniques from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), I help you develop a more flexible and supportive relationship with yourself, reducing self-doubt and helping confidence become something more natural and accessible rather than something you constantly have to force.
How Hypnotherapy Can Help You Build Confidence
Hypnotherapy can help you shift the mental and emotional patterns that maintain low confidence. Rather than simply trying to “think positively,” we work with the way your mind anticipates situations, represents yourself internally, and responds under pressure.
This is a collaborative process, and sessions are tailored to the specific situations where confidence feels difficult for you. My aim is not just to help you feel more confident during sessions, but to help you develop skills and strategies you can continue using independently.
One of the most useful tools I teach is self-hypnosis, allowing you to reinforce confidence-building patterns between sessions and continue strengthening these changes over time.
During our sessions, we may focus on areas such as:
🔸 Reducing Self-Doubt and Overthinking - Confidence is often disrupted by excessive internal monitoring and second-guessing. Hypnosis can help quiet this internal noise, allowing you to respond more naturally and intuitively.
🔸 Changing Internal Self-Image - Many people experience a subtle “inner picture” of themselves as uncertain or inadequate. Hypnotherapy helps reshape this self-image so you can access a more capable and grounded sense of self.
🔸 Build Emotional Familiarity with Confidence - Confidence isn’t just a thought; it’s also an emotional and physiological state. Through mental rehearsal and experiential techniques, we help confidence feel more familiar and accessible.
🔸 Working with Anticipatory Anxiety - Often confidence drops before situations even occur. We work with the imagination to reduce threat-based anticipation and create calmer expectations of future events.
🔸 Strengthen Stability Under Pressure - Confidence doesn’t mean never feeling nervous. We focus on helping you remain steady, flexible, and self-supportive even when situations feel challenging or uncertain.
🔸 Reduce Avoidance & Safety Behaviours - Avoidance can temporarily protect confidence, but often reinforces self-doubt over time. Together, we gradually build your ability to engage more fully in important situations.
🔸 Rehearse Real-World Situations - We may mentally rehearse upcoming conversations, presentations, social events, or other situations so you can approach them with greater calmness, clarity, and flexibility.
🔸 Develop Self-Compassion & Psychological Flexibility - Using approaches from ACT and CFT, we work on reducing harsh self-criticism and helping you respond to setbacks with greater resilience.
🔸 Learning Self-Hypnosis for Ongoing Confidence - You’ll learn practical self-hypnosis techniques to reinforce the work between sessions and help confidence become more automatic over time.
Confidence is not about becoming fearless or perfect. It’s about developing trust in your ability to cope, adapt, and respond effectively - even when situations feel uncomfortable or uncertain.
How Many Sessions Will You Need?
The number of sessions varies depending on how long-standing the confidence patterns are and how widely they affect your life.
🔸Situational confidence issues (e.g., interviews, presentations, dating, public speaking, exams) may improve with up to 4 sessions in addition to the initial consultation, alongside regular self-hypnosis practice between appointments.
🔸Long-standing confidence difficulties, social anxiety, chronic self-criticism, or deeply ingrained avoidance patterns often benefit from a more structured approach with at least 4 sessions beyond the initial consultation, allowing us to address different aspects of the issue.
We will regularly review your progress together and adapt the work based on your goals and experiences.
