What to Expect from Hypnotherapy Sessions

Here's exactly what happens, from your first call with me through to ongoing sessions, so you know what you're stepping into before you book anything.

Sessions take place in person at The Harbourside Practice in Redcliffe, or online via Zoom.

FREE 20-minute discovery call

This free 20-minute discovery call is designed to help us explore what you'd like support with and whether hypnotherapy is the right approach for your goals. We'll briefly discuss your situation, answer any questions you may have, and explain how the assessment and therapy process works so you can make an informed decision about moving forward.

Initial Consultation for Hypnotherapy

Upon booking, you'll receive a confirmation email along with an assessment questionnaire to complete beforehand. This isn't just paperwork - taking the time to reflect on it helps you start clarifying what you actually want to change, and often brings useful insights before we've even met. Your answers also let me prepare properly, so our time together goes straight into deeper work rather than basic information-gathering.

The initial consultation itself is a 90-minute session. We'll go through your questionnaire together in depth, explore your answers, and expand on anything that needs more detail.

We'll look at how these issues show up in your day-to-day life and start identifying what's been maintaining them, so we get a clear picture of what needs to shift.

We'll also set clear, measurable goals for hypnotherapy, so you can actually recognise progress as it happens, and where relevant, we'll look at likely obstacles and start shaping strategies around them.

I'll draw on psychology and neuroscience to offer relevant insight into your situation - this often reduces confusion and self-blame, and gives us a clearer foundation to work from.

You'll also be introduced to hypnosis in a practical, experiential way: guided imagination exercises and a brief introductory hypnosis experience, where you'll learn how to enter and exit it safely and comfortably. Curious exactly what hypnosis is - and isn't? Read my full explanation →

You'll also leave with a simple self-hypnosis process you can build on between sessions.

Many clients find this session valuable in its own right - it brings clarity and direction even before the ongoing work begins.

Ongoing Hypnotherapy Sessions

Each session is tailored to what you're working on - that might mean relaxation techniques, working with thought patterns, emotional regulation, building a more compassionate mindset, or strategies for facing fears and building confidence. Alongside hypnotherapy, I draw on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) to keep the approach well-rounded.

Each session starts with reviewing your progress and setting goals for that session. During hypnosis, you'll sit comfortably while I guide you through the process, using imagery and tailored suggestions aimed at building confidence, motivation, and emotional wellbeing.

The day after each session, you'll get an email with further reading and a summary of what we covered, so you can revisit it any time.

One thing worth saying clearly: hypnotherapy isn't something "done to" you - it's not your problems being hypnotised away. It's collaborative. Change happens because you're committed to it and willing to put the techniques into practice.
